4to = height of approximately 12 inches;

8vo = height of approximately 9 inches;

12mo = height of approximately 7 or 8 inches;  

AN = as new, has the shine, feel, and smell of a new book; F = fine, not quite rising to AN; NF, near fine. E = excellent, a very nice copy with just minor defects, if any; VG = very good, shows some wear with major defects noted;  G = good, has defects but still a sound readable copy; RC = reading copy, many defects but readable.

bced = book club edition; bds = boards (covers); bkpl = bookplate; cl = cloth; cvr = cover; dscd = discard; dj = dust jacket; enpr = endpaper; illus = illustration (ed); juv = juvenile; lib = library copy; nd = no date listed. n/f = not a first edition; o/e/s = owner’s embossed stamp, that hideous practice of book branding; oi = owner's initials; o/n(/a) = owner's name (address), either written or on a small address label, usually on fly or endpaper, sometimes lists date; prcl = price clipped from dj; pb = paperback; Pbd = Perfectbound, a thermoplastic binding often used in soft cover books; pp = pages; sm = small; stp = stamp; rmdrmk = remainder mark; s/b = softbound; w/ = with; w/o = without; WW I = World War I; WW II = World War II.
