S028.    Wells, H.G. THE CROQUET PLAYER.  Viking, 1937.   First U.S. edition.  HC 12mo, 98 pp.  Illustrations by Clifton Line.  At the time, a reviewer opined: "One of the most unusual stories I have read for a long time.  Mr. Wells is at his best telling a story and getting his ideas across at the same time.  It is a gruesome and gripping tale of the horror of Cainsmarsh and its implications."   Likely, the reviewer did not read the book.  Its central theme is complacency and tolerance by civilized peoples of the savagery of other nations, a timely topic in the era when Hitler was beginning his destruction.   Book has early foxing at extremes of gray linen boards, else EXCELLENT with tight binding and sound hinges, and no writing.  Dj spine darkened, chips and rubs at extremes, but with price intact.  $18.   9uwg8%.

Soc., 1984.  First edition.  Softbound 6" x 9", 124 pp., photos, index.  Signed by the author.  Fascinating account of the LaRue, Ohio, Oorang Indians professional football team.  The Oorang Indians National Football League team was composed wholly of American Indians, including Jim Thorpe, and played in the league in 1922 and 1923.  Much interesting information on the team, Thorpe, and the early days of the N.F.L.   Book is EXCELLENT+ in wraps.  $22.  qar1000%
